Na het College van B en W stemde ook de gemeenteraad er nu mee in.
De bibliotheek in Hoogeveen verhuist nu definitief naar de protestantse, voormalig gereformeerde Hoofdstraatkerk in het centrum. De gemeenteraad is nu ook akkoord gegaan met de aankoop van het in kerkhistorisch opzicht historische pand voor een bedrag van 860.000 euro.
Alle fracties in de gemeenteraad stemden donderdag in met het besluit van B en W, al deed het de christelijke partijen pijn omdat de kerk voor velen een zeer bijzonder gebouw is; men sprak de hoop uit dat de karakteristieke elementen van de Hoofdstraatkerk behouden blijven.
Zoals we al eerder meedeelden is het niet direct afgelopen met de kerkdiensten van de Protestantse Gemeente. De kerk wordt pas in 2027 definitief eigendom van de burgerlijke gemeente.
De huidige bieb.
De tegenwoordige locatie van de Hoogeveense bibliotheek, gevestigd aan de Willemskade, moet volgens de burgerlijke gemeente afgestoten worden omdat de huur van het gebouw erg hoog is. Bovendien is het gebouw door de aanwezige technische mankementen niet erg toekomstbestendig. Een maandenlange zoektocht van de burgerlijke gemeente leverde uiteindelijk als belangrijkste kanshebber de voormalig gereformeerde Hoofdstraatkerk op, vooral omdat de kerk in het centrum van de stad staat, wat een van de vereisten was voor de nieuwe vestigingsplaats van de bibliotheek.
Verbouwing.
Voordat die tienduizenden bibliotheekboeken overgebracht kunnen worden naar de kerk, moet het bedehuis nog wel stevig verbouwd worden. De vermoedelijke totale kosten om de bieb uiteindelijk in de kerk te krijgen bedragen ongeveer 10,5 miljoen euro, want er moet flink verbouwd worden.

All parties in the council voted on Thursday in favor of the decision by B&W, although it was difficult for the Christian parties, as the church is a very special building for many people; they expressed the hope that the characteristic elements of the Hoofdstraat Church will be preserved.
As we reported earlier, church services of the Protestant Congregation will not end immediately. The church will not officially become property of the civil municipality until 2027.
The current library.
According to the municipality, the current location of the Hoogeveen library, situated on the Willemskade, must be given up because the rent for the building is very high. In addition, the building’s technical defects make it poorly suited for the future. After a months-long search, the former ‘gereformeerde’ Hoofdstraat Church emerged as the strongest candidate, mainly because it is located in the city center—one of the key requirements for the new library site.
Renovation.
Before the tens of thousands of library books can be moved into the church, the building will first need major renovation. The estimated total cost of eventually housing the library in the church is around 10.5 million euros, as substantial construction work will be required.
