Translation into English:
Demolition of Garage Affects Emmaus Church in Hattem.
The demolition of a former garage next to the Emmaus Church in Hattem, a Protestant church building formerly belonging to the ‘Gereformeerde’ Church, is necessary to make way for the construction of apartments. However, the work is also having consequences for the church.
Damage has occurred to one of the church building’s walls, and the Campanile, the freestanding bell tower next to the church, must be relocated.
During the demolition, it became apparent that the garage wall was connected to a wall of the church. This caused damage to the brickwork of the Emmaus Church. According to the Churchwardens’ Board, the damage does not threaten the structural stability of the building. Nevertheless, the wall will be repaired. The repair work is expected to take several weeks.
The Campanile must also be relocated. A detailed plan has been drawn up for this purpose and approved by the Churchwardens’ Board. The work began on Monday, 28 September 2026.
To ensure that the work can be carried out safely, part of the church square will be temporarily closed. The church entrances will remain accessible. Work will be suspended during funerals.
The Churchwardens’ Board remains in contact with the property developer regarding the demolition and the subsequent new construction. The developer is responsible for carrying out the work and will also cover all associated costs.
