Maar over monumentenstatus is nog niet beslist.

De protestantse, voormalig gereformeerde Regenboogkerk in de Grotestraat in Nijverdal lijkt voorlopig veiliggesteld: sloop is geen optie meer. Uit onderzoek van erfgoedspecialisten blijkt dat het kerkgebouw een aanzienlijke cultuurhistorische waarde heeft. Daarmee komt een aanwijzing als gemeentelijk monument in beeld, al heeft het college van B en W hierover nog geen definitief besluit genomen.

De Protestantse Gemeente Nijverdal wil de Regenboogkerk en het bijbehorende zalencentrum Het Spectrum verkopen. De kerkelijke gemeente investeert in de renovatie en verduurzaming van Het Centrum aan de Constantijnstraat, waar zij haar activiteiten wil voortzetten. Om deze miljoeneninvestering te financieren, worden de andere gebouwen afgestoten. Voor de locatie van de Regenboogkerk bestaan plannen voor woningbouw, waarbij het uiterlijk behouden blijft.

De vroegere gereformeerde kerk heeft al de status van ‘karakteristiek pand’, wat beperkte bescherming biedt. De Historische Kring Hellendoorn-Nijverdal vond dat onvoldoende en vroeg de gemeente om nader onderzoek. Dat onderzoek, uitgevoerd door Het Oversticht, concludeert dat de kerk voldoet aan de voorwaarden voor een gemeentelijke monumentenstatus. De Monumentenraad bespreekt dit later deze maand.

Binnen het kerkbestuur bestaan zorgen dat een monumentenaanwijzing de herontwikkeling kan bemoeilijken. De kerkenraadsvoorzitter wil hierover inhoudelijk niet reageren, maar bevestigt dat overleg met de burgerlijke gemeente gaande is. Volgens het College wordt sloop uitgesloten en wordt eerst gezocht naar een goede balans tussen behoud en nieuwe invulling. Pas daarna volgt een definitief besluit over de monumentenstatus.

The Protestant, former ‘gereformeerde’ Rainbow Church on Grotestraat in Nijverdal appears to be provisionally safeguarded: demolition is no longer an option. Research by heritage specialists shows that the church building has significant cultural-historical value. This brings a designation as a municipal monument into view, although the Municipal Executive (Mayor and Aldermen) has not yet taken a final decision on the matter.

The Protestant Congregation of Nijverdal wants to sell the Rainbow Church and the associated community hall Het Spectrum. The church congregation is investing in the renovation and sustainability improvements of Het Centrum on Constantijnstraat, where it intends to continue its activities. To finance this multi-million-euro investment, the other buildings will be disposed of. Plans exist for residential development at the Rainbow Church site, with the exterior of the building being preserved.

The former ‘gereformeerde’ church already has the status of a “characteristic building,” which provides limited protection. The Historical Society Hellendoorn–Nijverdal considered this insufficient and asked the municipality to carry out further research. That research, conducted by Het Oversticht, concludes that the church meets the criteria for designation as a municipal monument. The Monuments Council will discuss this later this month.

Within the church board there are concerns that a monument designation could complicate redevelopment. The chair of the church council does not wish to comment on this substantively, but confirms that consultations with the civil municipality are ongoing. According to the Municipal Executive, demolition is ruled out and the first step is to seek a good balance between preservation and a new use. Only after that will a final decision be made on the monument status.
