De protestantse, voormalig gereformeerde Maranathakerk aan de Bovendwarsweg op ’t Harde (op de Veluwe) laat zien dat duurzaamheid en kerk-zijn hand in hand gaan. Als aangesloten Groene Kerk zet de protestantse gemeente jaarlijks concrete stappen om de zorg voor mens, milieu en schepping zichtbaar te maken.
Het kerkgebouw is de afgelopen jaren flink verduurzaamd. Zo liggen er achtendertig zonnepanelen op het dak, is de verlichting vervangen door energiezuinige ledverlichting en worden ruimtes met energiezuinige airco’s afzonderlijk verwarmd. Ook zijn diverse isolatiemaatregelen uitgevoerd. De pastorie werd in 2024 volledig gerenoveerd en voorzien van een full electric warmtepomp, waardoor deze volledig gasloos is.
Naast energiebesparing maakt de kerk bewuste keuzes op financieel gebied door te bankieren bij groene banken, duurzaam te investeren en groene stroom te gebruiken. Ook biedt de Maranathakerk ruimte aan de voedselbank.
Duurzaamheid krijgt eveneens een plaats in het kerkelijk leven. Tijdens kerkdiensten, gebeden en activiteiten zoals filmavonden en politieke fora is regelmatig aandacht voor de zorg voor de schepping.

As a member of the Green Church network, the Protestant congregation takes concrete steps each year to make its care for people, the environment, and creation visible.
In recent years, the church building has undergone significant sustainability improvements. Thirty-eight solar panels have been installed on the roof, the lighting has been replaced with energy-efficient LED fixtures, and individual rooms are heated separately using energy-efficient heat pump air-conditioning units. In addition, several insulation measures have been carried out. In 2024, the church’s manse (parsonage) was completely renovated and equipped with an all-electric heat pump, making it entirely free of natural gas.
Beyond reducing energy consumption, the church also makes conscious financial choices by banking with environmentally responsible banks, investing sustainably, and purchasing renewable electricity. The Maranatha Church also provides space for the local food bank.
Sustainability is likewise integrated into church life. Worship services, prayers, and activities such as film evenings and political forums regularly include attention to caring for creation.
Although the church still faces challenges—such as the end of the net metering scheme for solar energy and the future replacement of its central heating boilers—the Maranatha Church remains committed to further improving its sustainability. In doing so, the congregation reaffirms its ambition to continue combining faith with responsibility for God’s creation in the years ahead.
