Translation into English:
Höftekerk Celebrates 200 Years of Its Organ with a Concert.
The organ in the Protestant Höftekerk (formerly a ‘gereformeerde’ church) in Hardenberg is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year. This special milestone will be marked on Thursday, 22 October 2026, with a concert by Evan Bogerd, organist at the Westerkerk in Amsterdam. Riekus Hamberg, who has been an organist for sixty years, also has a special connection with this historic instrument.
The organ was built in 1826 and was moved from Baarn to the Höftekerk in 1891. Over the years, it underwent several expansions and modifications. After the instrument began to experience increasingly serious technical problems, it underwent a major restoration in the early 1980s. During this work, every effort was made to preserve and restore its historic character.
According to Hamberg, what makes the organ particularly special is the combination of the instrument itself, its distinctive sound, and the acoustics of the church. He has been involved in the Thursday evening concerts at the Höftekerk since 1982. He also once helped raise funds for an additional stop, the bazuin (a trumpet-like reed stop), which made it possible to add it to the organ after all.
Hamberg, who knows the instrument inside out, is looking forward to the anniversary concert. He has heard Bogerd perform before and was impressed by his musical abilities. This time, Hamberg himself will take a seat in the church pews to listen. After sixty years at the organ, he can now enjoy the instrument with which he has such a close connection.
The anniversary concert on Thursday, 22 October, will therefore celebrate not only two centuries of organ history but also the special significance the instrument has held for the church and the town of Hardenberg across generations.
