De kerkenraad van de Protestantse Gemeente in het Groningse Bedum ( die gebruik maakt van de voormalig gereformeerde Maranathakerk) maakte in de in mei 2025 gehouden gemeentevergaderingen haar verbouwplannen bekend met betrekking tot de Maranathakerk.
In een persbericht van de kerkenraad werd meegedeeld dat men zich met de verbouwing ten doel stelt de kerk te transformeren naar een sociaal-cultureel ontmoetingscentrum voor het gehele dorp Bedum. In de plannen zal het gebouw worden ondergebracht in een stichting. Al sinds 2023 denkt de Projectgroep Toekomst Kerkgebouw na over de toekomstige inzet van het kerkgebouw.
Na de presentatie van de Dorpsvisie Bedum 2030 van het ‘Algemeen Plaatselijk Belang Bedum’ (APB), die plaatsvond in in april 2024, werkten de Protestantse Gemeente, het APB, de bedrijvenvereniging BVGB, de ijsbaanvereniging én de gemeente Het Hogeland intensief samen om voor de toekomst goede accommodaties te kunnen bieden in Bedum. Die samenwerking past geheel in de visie die gemeente Het Hogeland voor het dorp Bedum presenteerde in het zgn. Masterplan en het Centrumplan.
Het verbouwplan van de Maranathakerk heeft ten doel dat in 2027 het kerkgebouw een multifunctionele ruimte is geworden waar concerten, evenementen, voorstellingen, grote vergaderingen en ook kerkdiensten gehouden kunnen worden. Het gebouw zal goed aansluiten op de plannen die gemeente Het Hogeland realiseert aan onder meer het Kerkplein. De ijsbaanvereniging maakte ondertussen plannen om ‘sport en bewegen’ op haar terrein meer te gaan stimuleren. De Hervormde Gemeente Bedum richt zich op het aantrekkelijk maken van de Walfriduskerk met haar scheve toren als toeristische trekpleister in Bedum.

De Protestantse Gemeente Bedum vatte de functionele eisen voor de kerkzaal van de Maranathakerk als volgt samen: “We realiseren een neutrale zaal die geschikt is voor diensten, begrafenissen, huwelijksvoltrekkingen, concerten, toneel, evenementen en grote vergaderingen voor het gehele dorp Bedum. De kerkzaal is door haar ruimte, hoogte en vorm herkenbaar. De geschiedenis blijft overeind als orgel(kast en instrument), het plafond/plenum, de galerijbetimmering en de grote ramen intact blijven. De hoofdstructuur van de zaal is goed”.
“De kerkzaal moet in de basis geschikt zijn om zondagse diensten te vieren met 200 tot 300 mensen, huwelijken te voltrekken (met 100 tot 200 mensen), grotere uitvaarten te kunnen hebben (met 300 tot 400 mensen) en evenementen en concerten te houden (voor 150 tot 450 mensen). De kerkzaal wordt compacter en intiemer om voor een kleiner wordende zondagse gemeente passend te zijn. 275 plaatsen beneden en de bestaande 150 plaatsen boven [op de gaanderij] voldoet. (…) De kansel, het liturgisch front, de tekstborden, een gedachteniswand, de monitorschermen met hulpconstructies, een dooprol en “doopschaapjes” krijgen een nieuwe positie en worden op een meer neutrale manier ingericht om het gebouw niet primair protestants te laten voorkomen”.

Renovation Plans for Maranatha Church Bedum (Gr.)
The Church Council of the Protestant Congregation in Bedum, Groningen (which uses the former ‘gereformeerde’ Maranatha Church), announced its renovation plans during the congregational meetings held in May 2025.
In a press release, the Church Council stated that the goal of the renovation is to transform the church into a socio-cultural meeting center for the entire village of Bedum. The plans involve housing the building under a foundation. Since 2023, the Project Group for the Future of the Church Building has been considering the future use of the church building.
After the presentation of the ‘Village Vision for Bedum 2030’ by the ‘General Local Interest Bedum’ (APB) in April 2024, the Protestant Congregstion, the APB, the BVGB business association, the ice rink association, and the municipality of Het Hogeland have worked intensively together to provide good facilities for the future of Bedum. This collaboration fits entirely into the vision that the municipality of Het Hogeland presented for Bedum in the so-called Master Plan and the Central Plan.
The renovation plan for the Maranatha Church aims to make the church a multifunctional space by 2027, where concerts, events, performances, large meetings, and church services can be held. The building will align well with the plans being realized by the municipality of Het Hogeland, particularly at Church Square. Meanwhile, the ice rink association has made plans to promote ‘sports and exercise’ at its site. The ‘Hervormde’ Congregation of Bedum is focusing on making the Walfridus Church, with its crooked tower, an attractive tourist attraction in Bedum.
Summary of the Renovation Plan.
The Protestant Congregation of Bedum summarized the functional requirements for the church hall of the Maranatha Church as follows: “We aim to create a neutral hall suitable for services, funerals, weddings, concerts, theater, events, and large meetings for the entire village of Bedum. The church hall is recognizable by its space, height, and shape. The history will remain intact with the organ (case and instrument), the ceiling/plenum, the gallery paneling, and the large windows preserved. The main structure of the hall is solid.”
“The church hall must primarily be suitable for Sunday services with 200 to 300 people, weddings (with 100 to 200 people), larger funerals (with 300 to 400 people), and events and concerts (for 150 to 450 people). The church hall will become more compact and intimate to suit a smaller Sunday congregation. 275 seats downstairs and the existing 150 seats upstairs [in the gallery] will suffice. (…) The pulpit, the liturgical front, the text boards, a memorial wall, the monitor screens with supporting structures, a baptismal roll, and ‘baptism lambs’ will have new positions and will be arranged in a more neutral manner so that the building will not primarily appear Protestant.”
