Het College van Burgemeester en Wethouders van Goes heeft vergevorderde plannen om de (rijks-) monumentale (voormalig hervormde) Grote of Magdalenakerk voor een symbolisch bedrag van € 571 over te nemen van van de Protestantse Gemeente Goes. Dan zou de voormalig gereformeerde Vredeskerk als kerkgebouw van de Protestantse Gemeente (PKN) te Goes overblijven. Wel is in Goes nog een zelfstandige Hervormde Gemeente die tot de PKN behoort.
Het onderhoud van de Magdalenakerk is voor de Protestantse Gemeente te duur geworden voor het houden van alleen kerkdiensten. Daarom wil de burgerlijke gemeente de kerk een maatschappelijke functie geven. De gemeente Goes ziet in de leegkomende kerk een kans om een multifunctionele ontmoetingsruimte te maken, met mogelijkheden voor vergaderingen, culturele activiteiten en flexibele werkplekken. Ook denkt men aan de mogelijkheid van een nieuwe toeristische trekpleister.
De aankoopprijs is weliswaar symbolisch, maar het onderhoud en de verbouw van de kerk zorgen ook voor de burgerlijke gemeente voor een grote kostenpost van ongeveer € 250.000. De gemeenteraad moet deze maand de plannen nog goedkeuren.
Reguliere kerkdiensten van de Protestantse Gemeente worden dan niet meer ook in de Magdalenakerk gehouden, maar gaan dan naar de voormalig gereformeerde Vredeskerk aan het ds. W.H. van der Vegtplein. De Magdalenakerk blijft alleen in uitzonderlijke gevallen nog beschikbaar voor huwelijks- en kerstdiensten.
De Vredeskerk werd gebouwd als gereformeerde Oosterkerk. Deze werd in de jaren 2014 en 2015 verbouwd. Sinds die verbouwing heet dit kerkgebouw Vredeskerk. De kerk staat, zoals opgemerkt aan het ds. W.H. van der Vegtplein. Dit plein werd genoemd naar ds. W.H. van der Vegt (1895-1944), die van 1931 tot 1944 predikant was bij de Gereformeerde Kerk te Goes.

The Municipal Executive (Mayor and Aldermen) of Goes has advanced plans to take over the (nationally listed) monumental (former ‘hervormde’) Grote or Magdalene Church from the Protestant Congregation of Goes for a symbolic amount of €571. If this happens, the former ‘gereformeerde’ Peace Church (Vredeskerk) would remain as the church building of the Protestant Congregation (PKN). There is also in Goes an independent ‘Hervormde’ Congregation belonigng tot the PKN
Maintenance of the Magdalene Church has become too expensive for the Protestant Congregation to continue using it solely for worship services. For this reason, the civil municipality wants to give the church a social function. The municipality of Goes sees the soon-to-be-vacant church as an opportunity to create a multifunctional meeting space, with facilities for meetings, cultural activities, and flexible workspaces. There is also consideration of turning it into a new tourist attraction.
Although the purchase price is symbolic, the maintenance and renovation of the church will still represent a major expense for the municipality, estimated at around €250,000. The municipal council still has to approve the plans later this month.
Regular worship services of the Protestant Congregation will no longer be held in the Magdalene Church, but will move to the former ‘gereformeerde’ Peace Church at Reverend W. H. van der Vegt Square. The Magdalene Church will remain available only in exceptional cases for weddings and Christmas services.
The Peace Church was originally built as the ‘gereformeerde’ Oosterkerk (Eastern Church). It was renovated in 2014 and 2015, and since that renovation the building has been known as the Vredeskerk (Peace Church). The church is located, as noted, on the Reverend W. H. van der Vegt Square. This square was named after Reverend W. H. van der Vegt (1895–1944), who served as minister of the ‘Gereformeerde’ Church in Goes from 1931 to 1944.
