Voor het protestantse, voormalig gereformeerde, kerkgebouw De Ark in de wijk Kethel te Schiedam lijkt na een periode van leegstand eindelijk een nieuwe bestemming in zicht.

Het gebouw, dat behoort tot de Protestantse Kerk in Nederland en dat aanvankelijk dienst deed als bij de plaatselijke Gereformeerde Kerk, staat al ongeveer twee jaar leeg. De laatste dienst werd er op 24 augustus 2024 gehouden.

De eigenaar, de Protestantse Gemeente Kethel, heeft inmiddels een koper gevonden. Er is een voorlopig koopcontract gesloten, waarmee een belangrijke stap is gezet richting herbestemming van het pand.

De verkoop is echter nog niet definitief. Omdat de grond waarop de kerk staat in erfpacht is uitgegeven door de Gemeente Schiedam, moet eerst overeenstemming worden bereikt over verlenging van deze erfpacht. Pas daarna kan de overdracht officieel worden afgerond.

Over de toekomstige invulling van het gebouw is nog niets concreets bekendgemaakt. Wel is duidelijk dat het kerkgebouw geen religieuze functie meer zal krijgen. Daarmee komt er een einde aan een periode waarin het gebouw leegstond en onzekerheid bestond over het behoud en gebruik ervan.

Met de voorgenomen verkoop lijkt er nu perspectief te ontstaan voor een nieuwe fase in het bestaan van De Ark.

The Protestant, formerly ‘gereformeerde’ church building De Ark in the Kethel district of Schiedam finally appears to have a new purpose in sight after a period of vacancy.

The building, which belongs to the Protestant Church in the Netherlands and originally served the local Reformed Church, has been empty for about two years. The last service was held there on Augusts 24, 2024.

The owner, the Protestant Congregation of Kethel, has now found a buyer. A preliminary purchase agreement has been signed, marking an important step toward repurposing the property.

However, the sale is not yet final. Because the land on which the church stands is held under a ground lease issued by the Municipality of Schiedam, an agreement must first be reached on extending this lease. Only then can the transfer be officially completed.

No concrete details have yet been announced about the building’s future use. It is clear, however, that the church will no longer serve a religious function. This brings to an end a period in which the building stood empty and there was uncertainty about its preservation and use.

With the planned sale, there now appears to be a перспектива (perspective) for a new phase in the life of De Ark.
