De gemeenteraad van Alblasserdam heeft op 7 juli 2026 ingestemd met de aankoop van de voormalige gereformeerde Havenkerk aan de Ieplaan in Alblasserdam. Voor de aankoop trekt de gemeente ongeveer 2,2 miljoen euro uit. Een ruime meerderheid van de raad stemde vóór het voorstel; alleen D66 stemde tegen.

De Havenkerk wordt sinds 2022 gebruikt als opvanglocatie voor ongeveer 150 Oekraïense ontheemden. Met de aankoop wil de gemeente deze opvang voor de komende jaren veiligstellen. Daarnaast wil het gemeentebestuur zelf kunnen bepalen welke bestemming het gebouw en de locatie in de toekomst krijgen. Volgens het college biedt eigendom meer regie over de ontwikkeling van deze centrale plek in Alblasserdam. Op langere termijn wordt gedacht aan herontwikkeling van de locatie, waarbij woningbouw een belangrijke mogelijkheid is.

De plannen hebben uiteenlopende reacties opgeroepen. In de gemeenteraad was er brede steun voor het veiligstellen van de opvanglocatie en voor de strategische positie die de gemeente daarmee krijgt. Tegelijkertijd klonken er kritische geluiden over de hoogte van de investering, de financiële risico’s en de vraag of de locatie niet beter direct voor woningbouw ontwikkeld kan worden. Ook onder inwoners lopen de meningen uiteen. Sommigen vinden het verstandig dat de gemeente de regie in eigen hand neemt, terwijl anderen zich zorgen maken over de kosten, de duur van de opvang en de toekomstige bestemming van het terrein.

De laatste kerkdienst in de Havenkerk werd gehouden op 29 mei 2022.

On 7 July 2026, the Alblasserdam Municipal Council approved the purchase of the former ‘gereformeerde’ Havenkerk church on Ieplaan in Alblasserdam. The municipality has allocated approximately €2.2 million for the acquisition. A large majority of the council voted in favor of the proposal; only the D66 party voted against it.

The Havenkerk has been used since 2022 as a shelter for approximately 150 displaced Ukrainians. By purchasing the building, the municipality aims to ensure that this accommodation can continue over the coming years. In addition, the municipal government wants to retain control over the building’s future use and the development of the site. According to the municipal executive, ownership provides greater control over the future development of this centrally located property in Alblasserdam. In the longer term, the site is expected to be redeveloped, with housing considered a key possibility.

The plans have prompted mixed reactions. Within the municipal council, there was broad support for securing the refugee accommodation and for the strategic position the purchase gives the municipality. At the same time, some council members raised concerns about the size of the investment, the financial risks involved, and whether the site would be better redeveloped immediately for housing. Local residents are also divided. Some believe it is wise for the municipality to take control of the site’s future, while others are concerned about the costs, the duration of the refugee accommodation, and the property’s eventual use.

The last church service in the Havenkerk was held on May 29, 2022.
