In 2021 diende het Cuypersgenootschap, een landelijke erfgoedvereniging, een verzoek in om twee naoorlogse kerken in Maassluis, waaronder de protestantse (voormalig gereformeerde) Immanuëlkerk aan de Lange Boonestraat, aan te wijzen als ‘gemeentelijk monument’.
Op verzoek van de Commissie Cultureel Erfgoed Maassluis (CCEM) is een objectieve meting gedaan van het kerkgebouw en deze toonde de ‘monumentwaardigheid’ van de kerk aan. De CCEM nam dit oordeel over in haar advies aan het College van Burgemeester en Wethouders om de kerk aan te wijzen als ‘gemeentelijk monument’.
De gemeente Maassluis gaat de Immanuëlkerk, tegen het advies van de eigen Commissie Cultureel Erfgoed in, toch niet aanwijzen als ‘gemeentelijk monument’. De economische belangen van de Protestantse Gemeente Maassluis (PGM) wegen volgens de burgerlijke gemeente zwaarder.

De PGM is eigenaar van de Immanuëlkerk. De protestantse gemeente bevindt zich momenteel in een ‘complexe overgangssituatie’ rond het ‘huisvestingsvraagstuk’. Het aanwijzen van de Immanuëlkerk als monument zou volgens de Protestantse Gemeente ervoor zorgen dat het behoud en de exploitatie van de Groote Kerk in gevaar komen.

The ‘Groote Kerk’ is a “national monument” and one of the most iconic buildings in the city. The Congregation believes that if the ‘Groote Kerk’ were taken out of use, it would threaten the structural condition of the church and thus reduce or even result in the loss of the building’s cultural-historical value.
“Iconic Object”
Instead of granting monument status, it is now proposed as a “compromise” to designate the Immanuel Church as an “Iconic Object.” This provides a form of protection for the Immanuel Church while allowing the PGM the necessary flexibility for future developments. The outer shell of the main volume of the Immanuel Church, the valuable concrete construction and the stained glass windows will thus remain protected. However, the lower rear section and the partially non-original interior will not be protected.
