Op zaterdag 11 oktober 2025 vanaf 11 uur ‘s ochtends wordt in de protestantse, voormalig gereformeerde Zuiderkerk in Drachten wordt een Open Dag gehouden ter gelegenheid van het 100-jarig bestaan van de kerk.

Het programma is veelomvattend: behalve dat een film gedraaid wordt van de renovatie van de kerk in 1984, is een doorlopende PowerPoint-voorstelling te zien van historische foto’s van de Zuiderkerk. Een stand met broodjes hamburger, idem met koffie en thee ontbreken niet. Ook is er de mogelijkheid boeken, jam en loten te kopen en draait er bovendien een Rad van Fortuin, om het financiële einddoel te bereiken dat nodig is voor de aanschaf van het nieuwe liturgische centrum, waarvoor de Zuiderkerkgemeente al enige tijd spaart. Inmiddels is het nieuwe liturgisch centrum op het podium geplaatst.

De jeugdige Levi Nijboer speelt om 13.35 uur op het orgel en musicus Rein Ferwerda geeft tot tweemaal toe een klein concert op de vleugel. Verder is er een portrettengalerij van predikanten die de afgelopen eeuw in de Zuiderkerk gediend hebben.

Presentatie van het gedenkboek.

Het hoogtepunt van de dag vindt om half twaalf plaats, als het voor dit jubileum samengestelde gedenkboek, Zuiderkerk Drachten, 100 jaar jong, 1925-2025, door de schrijver wordt aangeboden aan burgemeester Fred Veenstra van de Gemeente Smallingerland, waarvan Drachten de hoofdplaats is. Vanaf dat moment kan het boek voor 20 euro (excl. verzendkosten) besteld worden (zuiderkerk@pgdrachten.nl). Direct na de aanbieding van het boek staat op deze website een boekbespreking.

Om half vier vindt de trekking van de loterij plaats. Als prijzen zijn te winnen een weekend in een vakantiehuis ter waarde van 250 euro, een tegoedbon voor een voorstelling in het Drachtster cultureel centrum De Lawei ter waarde van 100 euro en een dinerbon van 50 euro. De opbrengst van de loterij is ook bestemd voor het nieuwe liturgisch centrum.

Kerkdienst op zondag.

Op zondag 12 oktober 2025 vindt in de Zuiderkerk om tien uur een speciale kerkdienst plaats ter gelegenheid van het eeuwfeest van de kerk (al eerder werd in de kerk een vesper gehouden). De voorganger is ds. Sijbrand Alblas. Een ensemble van het muziekcorps Crescendo speelt, precies als honderd jaar geleden (toen tot 1959 nog geen orgel in de kerk stond). Ook zal medewerking verleend worden door een zanggroep onder leiding van Lies Dijkstra. Uiteraard komen we op de kerkdienst later terug.

Celebration Weekend in Drachten for 100 Years of Zuiderkerk.

On Saturday, October 11, 2025, starting at 11 a.m., an Open Day will be held at the Protestant Zuiderkerk (formerly ‘gereformeerd’) in Drachten, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the church.

The program is extensive: in addition to a film about the church’s renovation in 1984, there will be a continuous PowerPoint presentation showing historical photos of the Zuiderkerk. There will be stalls selling hamburgers, as well as coffee and tea. Visitors will also be able to buy books, homemade jam, and raffle tickets. A Wheel of Fortune will be spinning as well, aiming to help reach the financial goal for the new liturgical center, which the Zuiderkerk congregation has been saving for.

The young Levi Nijboer will perform on the organ at 1:35 p.m., and musician Rein Ferwerda will give two short concerts on the grand piano. There will also be a portrait gallery of the ministers who have served in the Zuiderkerk over the past century.

Presentation of the Commemorative Book.

The highlight of the day takes place at 11:30 a.m., when the specially created commemorative book, Zuiderkerk Drachten, 100 Years Young, 1925–2025, will be presented by the author to Mayor Fred Veenstra of the Municipality of Smallingerland, of which Drachten is the main town.

At 3:30 PM, the lottery drawing will take place. Prizes include a weekend stay in a holiday home worth 250 euros, a gift voucher for a performance at the Drachtster cultural center De Lawei worth 100 euros, and a dinner voucher worth 50 euros. The proceeds from the lottery will also go toward the new liturgical center.

Church Service on Sunday.

On Sunday, October 12, 2025, a special church service will take place at 10:00 AM in the Zuiderkerk to mark the church’s centennial celebration. The service will be led by Rev. Sijbrand Alblas. An ensemble from the music corps Crescendo will perform—just as they did one hundred years ago (when there was no organ in the church until 1959). A vocal group led by Lies Dijkstra will also participate. Of course, we will return to the church service in more detail later.
