… maar de protestantse kerkdiensten gaan vooralsnog gewoon door.
Zoals we eerder meldden is de Protestantse Gemeente Beverwijk-Wijk aan Zee bezig met het afstoten van haar drie kerkgebouwen. Het onderhoud ervan wordt te duur voor de ongeveer vijfhonderd leden tellende gemeente.
Bovendien neemt het aantal vrijwilligers af en zijn de gebouwen verouderd en aan onderhoud toe. Daarbij gaat het om de voormalig hervormde Dorpskerk in Wijk aan Zee, de voormalig gereformeerde Vredevorstkerk in Beverwijk en de voormalig hervormde Grote Kerk in Beverwijk.
Begin 2023 werd de voormalig hervormde Grote Kerk voor het symbolische bedrag van een euro verkocht aan een stichting die het gebouw renoveert en exploiteert. De protestantse gemeente wil t.z.t. die kerk terug huren voor het houden van de kerkdiensten, maar – zoals al eerder meegedeeld – dat kan pas nadat de Grote Kerk de renovatie achter de rug heeft, zoals bijvoorbeeld die van de verwarming en de toiletten. De opknapbeurt zal vermoedelijk niet voor eind 2026 klaar zijn.
De Vredevorstkerk verkocht…
De voormalig gereformeerde Vredevorstkerk aan de Laan der Nederlanden wordt begin mei 2024 verkocht aan de Koptisch-Orthodoxe Kerk, die in Beverwijk een parochie heeft, maar de Vredevorstkerk zal tot het gereedkomen van de renovatie van de Grote Kerk gewoon gebruikt worden voor de kerkdiensten. De protestantse kerkdiensten worden om half tien gehouden (een half uur eerder dan normaal), en die van de Kopten om 11 uur.
‘Al doet de verkoop van de Vredevorstkerk pijn’, zoals namens de kerkenraad werd meegedeeld, men is allang blij dat het gebouw in ieder geval een christelijke kerk blijft. De leden van de Protestantse Gemeente werd uiteraard naar hun mening gevraagd, en hoewel niet iedereen het met de verkoop eens was, bestond wel begrip voor de verkoopplannen.
Overigens krijgt de Vredevorstkerk wel een andere naam, als ze in handen is van de Kopten: St. Maria en St. Petrus en St. Pauluskerk wordt de nieuwe naam. De protestanten zullen ongetwijfeld blijven spreken over ‘hun’ Vredevorstkerk…

As we reported earlier, the ‘Protestant Gemeente Beverwijk-Wijk aan Zee’ is in the process of divesting its three church buildings. Maintaining them has become too expensive for the approximately five hundred members of the congregation. Furthermore, the number of volunteers is decreasing, and the buildings are outdated and in need of maintenance. These include the former hervormde ‘Dorpskerk’ in Wijk aan Zee, the former gereformeerde ‘Vredevorstkerk’ in Beverwijk, and the former hervormde ‘Grote Kerk’, also in Beverwijk.
In early 2023, the Grote Kerk was sold for the symbolic amount of one euro to a foundation that renovates and operates the building. The former gereformeerde ‘Vredevorstkerk’ on Laan der Nederlanden will be sold in May 2024 to the Coptic Orthodox Church, which has a parish in Beverwijk, but the ‘Vredevorstkerk’ will continue to be used for protestant church services until the renovation of the ‘Grote Kerk’ is completed. The Protestant services will be held at half past nine (half an hour earlier than usual), and those of the Copts at 11 o’clock.
“Although the sale of the Vredevorstkerk is painful,” as was announced on behalf of the church council, they are relieved that the building will remain a Christian church. The members of the Protestant Congregation were, of course, asked for their opinion, and although not everyone agreed with the sale, there was understanding for the sales plans.
