De Afscheiding van 1834 is nu voor een groot publiek beschikbaar.

De langverwachte online-publicatie van de standaardwerken van dr. J. Wesseling (1912-1989) en dr. C. Smits (1917-1990) over de Afscheiding van 1834 en haar voorgeschiedenis tot ongeveer 1869, is nu gerealiseerd.

De digitale versie van de standaardwerken werd namelijk gepubliceerd op de website van de Digitale Bibliotheek voor de Nederlandse Letteren (DBNL) van de Koninklijke Bibliotheek in Den Haag. Daarmee is de geschiedenis van de Afscheiding in ons land voor een groot publiek beschikbaar gekomen. In beide seriewerken wordt de plaatselijke en regionale historie van de Afscheiding beschreven vanaf 1834 (compleet met de voorgeschiedenis van de Afscheiding in de dorpen en steden) tot ongeveer 1869, toen de Christelijke Afgescheidene Kerk zich verenigde met het grootste deel van de Gereformeerde Kerk onder ’t Kruis (die zich rond 1840 van de Christelijke Afgescheidene Kerk had afgesplitst), en in het vervolg ‘Christelijke Gereformeerde Kerk’ ging heten.

Een bijzonderheid is dat de digitale versie van de boeken ook te downloaden is als e-book, als PDF en in de vorm van scans. Zelfs kan de inhoud van de boeken afgedrukt worden. Wel moet er op gewezen worden dat de teksten auteursrechtelijk beschermd zijn.

Dr. J. Wesseling beschreef de geschiedenis van de Afscheiding in de provincies Groningen (in drie delen), Friesland (in drie delen), Overijssel (in twee delen) en Zeeland (eveneens in twee delen). De boeken werden gepubliceerd tussen 1975 en 1989 en beslaan in totaal bijna 3.300 pagina’s.

Dr. C. Smits beschreef de geschiedenis van de Afscheiding in negen delen, handelend over de classis Gorinchem en ‘Beneden Gelderland’, de Classis Dordrecht c.a., de provincie Utrecht, de Classes Rotterdam en Leiden, de provincie Noord-Brabant en de provincie Gelderland. Daarnaast verscheen een tweetal delen met talloze documenten over de Afscheiding in ons land, die bewaard worden in het archief te Pella, Iowa, waarheen ds. H.P. Scholte (1805-1868) in 1847 emigreerde. Tenslotte verscheen een deel met correspondentie over ‘Het Reveil en ds. H.P. Scholte’, ook afkomstig uit de archieven te Pella. De boeken werden gepubliceerd tussen 1971  en 1991 en de negen delen omvatten tezamen ongeveer 4.200 pagina’s.

Alleen de geschiedschrijving van de Afscheiding in de provincies Drenthe, Noord-Holland en Limburg wacht nog op een soortgelijke behandeling als die van dr. Wesseling en dr. Smits. Op onze website is echter over die provincies ook veel geschreven over de Afscheiding en over de verdere geschiedenis van meerdere Gereformeerde Kerken.

The Secession of 1834 is now available to a wide audience.

The long-awaited online publication of the standard works by Dr. J. Wesseling (1912-1989) and Dr. C. Smits (1917-1990) on the Secession of 1834 until about 1869 has now been realized.

The digital version of these standard works was published on the website of the ‘Digital Library for Dutch Literature’ (DBNL) of the Royal Library in The Hague. As a result, the history of the Secession in our country has become available to a broad audience. In both series, the history of the Secession is described from the years leading up to 1834 (with the prelude to the Secession) until around 1869, when the ‘Christian Seceded Church’ merged with the ‘Gereformeerde’ Church under the Cross (which had split from the ‘Christian Seceded Church’ around 1840), and was subsequently named the ‘Christelijke Gereformeerde Kerk’.

An interesting detail is that the digital version of the books can also be downloaded as an e-book, as a PDF, and in the form of scans.

Dr. C. Smits described the history of the Secession in nine volumes, covering the Classes Gorinchem and ‘Lower Gelderland,’ the Classis Dordrecht and surrounding areas, the province of Utrecht, the Classes Rotterdam and Leiden, the province of North Brabant, and the province of Gelderland. Additionally, two volumes appeared containing numerous documents about the Secession in our country, preserved in the archive in Pella, Iowa, to where Rev. H.P. Scholte (1805-1868) emigrated in 1847. Finally, a volume was published containing correspondence about ‘The Awakening and Rev. H.P. Scholte,’ also from the Pella archives. The books were published between 1971 and 1991, and the nine volumes together comprise about 4.200 pages.

Only the history of the Secession in the provinces of Drenthe, North Holland and Limburg is still awaiting similar treatment as that of Dr. Wesseling and Dr. Smits. However, much has also been written about the Secession and the further history of several ‘Gereformeerde’ Churches in those provinces on our website.
