De Protestantse Gemeente te Sassenheim heeft in een schrijven aan het College van B en W gevraagd de status van ‘gemeentelijk monument’ van de te koop staande protestantse (voormalig gereformeerde) Julianakerk af te halen.

Omdat de kerk als een ‘gemeentelijk monument’ werd aangewezen worden geïnteresseerden gehinderd in de mogelijkheden om het terrein aan de Julianalaan te ontwikkelen.

De biedingen die de Protestantse Gemeente als gevolg van de status ‘gemeentelijk monument’ intussen heeft ontvangen zijn zo gering dat deze voor de Protestantse Gemeente onaanvaardbaar zijn.

De enige mogelijkheid is volgens hen dat de kerk ontdaan wordt van de status van ‘gemeentelijk monument’.  De burgerlijke gemeente Teylingen, waarvan Sassenheim deel uitmaakt, heeft volgens de Protestantse Gemeente immers dringend behoefte aan woningen (ook op de locatie van de kerk), terwijl de Protestantse Gemeente de opbrengst van de verkoop van de Julianakerk dringend nodig heeft om ook in de toekomst te kunnen functioneren. Voor de ingrijpende opknapbeurt van de protestantse Dorpskerk is bovendien ongeveer twee miljoen euro nodig.

The Protestant Congregation of Sassenheim has written to the Mayor and Aldermen, requesting the removal of the ‘municipal monument’ status of the Protestant (formerly ‘gereformeerde’) Julianakerk, which is currently for sale.

Because the church has been designated as a ‘municipal monument’, potential buyers are hindered in their ability to develop the land on Julianalaan. The bids that the Protestant Congregation has received, due to the ‘municipal monument’ status, are so low that they are considered unacceptable by the congregation.

According to the Protestant Congregation, the only solution is for the church to be stripped of its ‘municipal monument’ status. The municipality of Teylingen, which includes Sassenheim, is in urgent need of housing (including on the church’s site), while the Protestant Congregation urgently needs the proceeds from the sale of the Julianakerk to continue functioning in the future. Additionally, around two million euros is required for the extensive renovation of the Protestant Dorpskerk.
