Zuiderkerk Assen is for sale again.
The former Protestant (originally ‘gereformeerde’) Zuiderkerk on Zuidersingel in Assen is once again on the market.
On behalf of the Zuiderkerk Assen Preservation Foundation, Redres de Erfgoedexpert BV is handling the sale of the Zuiderkerk at Zuidersingel 79–81 in Assen. Bids could be submitted until the end of November 2025.
The Zuiderkerk (1924/1925) was built on commission from the ‘Gereformeerde’ Church of Assen and designed by the architectural firm J. Smallenbroek & Son. The design is an example of traditionalist church architecture with clear influences from the Amsterdam School.
The Zuiderkerk is significant not only architecturally but also historically. In 1926, the famous Synod of Assen took place here, during which the so-called “Geelkerken case” was addressed. Dr. J.G. Geelkerken (1879–1960), a ‘gereformeerde’ minister in Amsterdam-Zuid, did not agree with the decision of the General Synod that the biblical accounts of “the trees and the speaking snake in paradise” were “sensory-perceptible” facts; the minister left the nature of those stories open.
Since 2011, the building has been used by Life Assen (formerly City Life Church). Contemporary facilities were added, while the monumental structure and spatial character remained unaffected. The former parsonage serves as a company residence and forms an inseparable part of the complex. Interested buyers would have to pay one million euros.
