Burgemeester Carola Schouten van Rotterdam zal op vrijdag 13 februari 2026 de Orgelzolders in de voormalig gereformeerde Breepleinkerk in Rotterdam-Zuid bezoeken.

Ze zal er naar een van de twee kleine zolders bij het orgel hoog in de kerk klimmen, waar vanaf voorjaar 1942 tot de bevrijding in mei 1945 drie Joodse echtparen schuilden, de families Kool en De Zoete. Er werd zelfs een kind geboren.

De onderduikers overleefden de verschrikkingen van de Tweede Wereldoorlog dankzij de hulp van de koster en de dominee en hun gezinnen, de families De Mars en Brillenburg Wurth. Een bijzondere rol was weggelegd voor de Surinaamse oogarts Leo Lashley die zich ontpopte tot verloskundige en de baby ter wereld hielp brengen.

De Stichting Schuilplaats Orgelzolders Rotterdam zet zich in om dit verhaal over moed, hoop en vertrouwen door te geven, aan kinderen en aan volwassenen. En nu dus aan de Rotterdamse burgemeester.

Mayor Carola Schouten of Rotterdam will visit the Organ Lofts in the former ‘gereformeerde’ Breepleinkerk church in Rotterdam-Zuid on Friday, 13 February 2026.

She will climb to one of the two small lofts near the organ, high up in the church, where from the spring of 1942 until the liberation in May 1945 three Jewish married couples were in hiding: the Kool and De Zoete families. A child was even born there.

The people in hiding survived the horrors of the Second World War thanks to the help of the church sexton and the minister and their families, the De Mars and Brillenburg Wurth families. A special role was played by the Surinamese ophthalmologist Leo Lashley, who rose to the occasion as a midwife and helped deliver the baby.
