De ‘Groote Kerk’ of de ‘Immanuëlkerk’ dicht?

De Protestantse Gemeente Maassluis staat voor een ingrijpende beslissing over de toekomst van haar kerkgebouwen. Na jaren van onderzoek en overleg moet uiteindelijk één kerkgebouw de centrale plek voor de kerkdiensten worden. De keuze gaat tussen de (voormalig gereformeerde) Immanuëlkerk en de Groote Kerk.

De discussie loopt al sinds 2020. Volgens de kerkenraad zijn de kosten voor het in stand houden van meerdere kerkgebouwen op de lange termijn niet meer op te brengen. Al in 2023 werd uitgesproken dat de gemeente uiteindelijk naar één centrale vierplek wil toewerken.

In april 2024 besloot de Algemene Kerkenraad dat de toekomst van de kerk belangrijker is dan het behoud van de gebouwen. Daarbij werd een overgangsperiode vastgesteld die loopt tot en met 2027. Uiterlijk dan moet duidelijk zijn welk kerkgebouw behouden blijft als centrale locatie voor de Protestantse Gemeente. Tot die tijd wordt afgezien van grote investeringen in beide kerken.

De keuze blijkt ingewikkeld. Voorstanders van de Groote Kerk wijzen op de historische en monumentale waarde van het markante gebouw, dat al eeuwenlang het silhouet van Maassluis bepaalt. De Immanuëlkerk wordt daarentegen gezien als praktischer en beter geschikt voor het huidige gemeentewerk, met lagere exploitatiekosten en meer gebruiksmogelijkheden.

In een recent adviesrapport worden beide scenario’s uitgebreid tegen elkaar afgewogen. Daaruit blijkt dat behoud van de Groote Kerk mogelijk is als de Immanuëlkerk wordt verkocht en de opbrengst wordt gebruikt voor de noodzakelijke aanpassingen aan het monument. Een keuze voor de Immanuëlkerk betekent volgens het rapport niet automatisch dat de Groote Kerk verdwijnt, maar wel dat het gebouw een andere bestemming zou moeten krijgen.

Een definitief besluit is voor zover bekend nog niet genomen. Wel bevindt de Protestantse Gemeente zich in de afrondende fase van het besluitvormingsproces. Daarmee lijkt de vraag niet langer óf er één kerkgebouw overblijft, maar welk gebouw uiteindelijk de toekomst van de protestantse gemeente in Maassluis zal bepalen.

‘Vertrouwenscrisis’.

Eind juni 2026 werd bekend dat de voorzitter van het College van Kerkrentmeesters (CvK) van de Protestantse Gemeente Maassluis zijn functie heeft neergelegd. De aanleiding is dat er de laatste maanden door een ernstige vertrouwenscrisis een onwerkbare situatie binnen het CvK is ontstaan waarvoor hij geen verantwoordelijkheid meer kon en wilde dragen. Of e.e.a. te maken heeft met de kwestie van de gebouwenkeuze is niet duidelijk.

The Protestant Congregation of Maassluis is facing a far-reaching decision about the future of its church buildings. After years of research and consultation, it must ultimately designate a single church as the central location for its worship services. The choice is between the (formerly Reformed) Immanuel Church and the Groote Kerk.

The discussion has been ongoing since 2020. According to the church council, the long-term costs of maintaining multiple church buildings are no longer financially sustainable. As early as 2023, the congregation expressed its intention to move toward a single central place of worship.

In April 2024, the General Church Council decided that the future of the congregation should take precedence over preserving its buildings. A transition period was established, running through the end of 2027. By that time, it must be clear which church building will remain as the central location for the Protestant Congregation. Until then, no major investments will be made in either church.

The decision has proved to be a difficult one. Supporters of the Groote Kerk point to its historical and monumental significance, as the iconic building has defined the skyline of Maassluis for centuries. The Immanuel Church, by contrast, is regarded as more practical and better suited to the congregation’s current activities, with lower operating costs and greater flexibility for a variety of uses.

A recent advisory report examines both options in detail. It concludes that preserving the Groote Kerk would be feasible if the Immanuel Church were sold, with the proceeds being used to fund the necessary renovations to the historic monument. Choosing the Immanuel Church, however, would not automatically mean the end of the Groote Kerk. According to the report, the building would instead need to be given a new purpose.

As far as is known, no final decision has yet been made. However, the Protestant Congregation is now in the concluding phase of its decision-making process. As a result, the question no longer appears to be whether only one church building will remain, but rather which building will shape the future of the Protestant congregation in Maassluis.

“Crisis of Confidence”.

At the end of June 2026, it became known that the chairman of the Board of Churchwardens (College of Churchwardens, CvK) of the Protestant Congregation of Maassluis had resigned from his position. The reason given was that, over the past several months, a serious crisis of confidence had created an unworkable situation within the Board, for which he could no longer accept or assume responsibility. Whether this development is connected to the dispute over the choice of church building remains unclear.
