In juni 2024 organiseert de Christelijke Hogeschool Ede, in samenwerking met het HDC Centre for Religious History van de Vrije Universiteit een tweedelige Masterclass over ‘De actuele betekenis van Abraham Kuyper’.
De tweedelige masterclass wordt verzorgd door Dr. Johan Snel, die eind 2023 promoveerde aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam op een proefschrift over Abraham Kuyper en wordt gehouden in de Christelijke Hogeschool Ede, Oude Kerkweg 100 te Ede op 13 en 27 juni 2024 van 17.30 uur tot 21.00 uur (op beide dagen inclusief diner vanaf 17.30 uur).
De tweedelige Masterclass over Kuyper behandelt de volgende onderwerpen:
Masterclass 1 – Kuypers betekenis voor de Nederlandse samenleving. Onze eerste democraat.
In zijn tijd had dr. Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920) een grote invloed op de Nederlandse samenleving. Niet op de verzuiling, waar hij tegen was, maar wel op de democratie en de mogelijkheid voor gewone mensen om daaraan deel te nemen: hij was een vurige democraat en de sociale kwestie stond nummer één op zijn prioriteitenlijstje. Nog steeds is zijn invloed op de vorming van de Nederlandse samenleving goed aanwijsbaar, Kuyper was een van de invloedrijkste Nederlanders ooit.
Masterclass 2 – Waarom reisde Kuyper de halve wereld af? De internationale Kuyper.
Kuyper reisde veel en uitbundig, meer dan zijn collega’s en tijdgenoten. Die reizen deden wat met hem: hij las de kranten, liet zich overal goed documenteren en kwam telkens met nieuwe ideeën thuis. We reizen hem na op zijn avontuurlijke reizen en kijken welke invloed ze op hem hadden. We volgen hem ook als alpinist: elke zomer maakte hij lange trektochten door de Alpen en deed hij de hoogste beklimmingen. Dat verhaal is nog nooit eerder verteld, en ook niet welke betekenis zijn alpinisme had voor zijn kijk op de wereld.

Two-part Masterclass on Abraham Kuyper.
In June 2024, the Christian University of Ede, in collaboration with the HDC Centre for Religious History of the Vrije Universiteit, will organize a two-part Masterclass on ‘The Contemporary Significance of Abraham Kuyper’.
The two-part masterclass will be conducted by Dr. Johan Snel, who completed his PhD at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam at the end of 2023 on a dissertation about Abraham Kuyper. The masterclass will take place at the Christian University of Ede, Oude Kerkweg 100, Ede on June 13 and 27, 2024, from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM (including dinner from 5:30 PM on both days).

Masterclass 1 – Kuyper’s significance for Dutch society. Our first democrat.
In his time, Dr. Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920) had a significant influence on Dutch society. Not on the pillarization, which he opposed, but on democracy and the opportunity for ordinary people to participate in it: he was a fervent democrat, and the social issue was number one on his priority list. His influence on the formation of Dutch society is still evident today; Kuyper was one of the most influential Dutch figures ever.
Masterclass 2 – Why did Kuyper travel halfway around the world? The international Kuyper.
Kuyper traveled extensively and extravagantly, more than his colleagues and contemporaries. Those travels affected him: he read the newspapers, familiarized himself with the local conditions everywhere, and always came home with new ideas. We will follow him on his adventurous journeys and examine their influence on him. We will also follow him as an alpinist: every summer, he made long treks through the Alps and climbed the highest peaks. This story has never been told before, nor has the significance of his mountaineering for his worldview.
