‘Er wordt niet gesproken over kerksluiting, maar over samenwerking en medegebruik’.

De gemeente Gooise Meren onderzoekt de mogelijkheden om de bibliotheek in Bussum uit te breiden tot een bredere culturele ontmoetingsplek. Daarbij wordt niet alleen gekeken naar verbouwing van het huidige bibliotheekgebouw en uitbreiding met het naastgelegen leegstaande pand, maar ook naar een mogelijke rol voor de protestantse, voormalig gereformeerde Wilhelminakerk.

De plannen maken deel uit van de ontwikkeling van een zogenoemde Third Place: een plek waar inwoners niet alleen boeken lenen, maar ook terechtkunnen voor lezingen, cursussen, ontmoetingen en culturele activiteiten. Volgens de burgerlijke gemeente is de huidige bibliotheek daarvoor te klein geworden.

Bijzonder is dat ook de Wilhelminakerk, direct naast de bibliotheek aan het Wilhelminaplantsoen, nadrukkelijk in de verkenningen wordt betrokken. De Protestantse Gemeente Bussum heeft aangegeven hierover mee te willen denken. Daarbij gaat het niet om sluiting van de kerk, maar om mogelijke samenwerking en medegebruik.

De kerk zou ruimte kunnen bieden aan activiteiten waarvoor de bibliotheek zelf minder geschikt is, zoals concerten, filmvoorstellingen, lezingen en grotere bijeenkomsten. Dat sluit aan bij de praktijk van vandaag, want de Wilhelminakerk wordt naast de erediensten al regelmatig gebruikt voor culturele evenementen en exposities.

Geen sprake van onttrekking aan de eredienst.

Van plannen om het gebouw aan de eredienst te onttrekken is dus geen sprake. Integendeel, de kerk heeft juist haar honderdjarig bestaan gevierd met een jubileumkerkdienst, de publicatie van een jubileumboekje en allerlei andere activiteiten. Ook speelt de Wilhelminakerk een belangrijke rol in het kerkelijk leven van Bussum. De gesprekken lijken daarom vooral gericht op een toekomst waarin de Wilhelminakerk haar kerkelijke functie behoudt, maar daarnaast een grotere rol krijgt als culturele ontmoetingsplek in het hart van Bussum.

De burgerlijke gemeente werkt de plannen de komende tijd verder uit. Naar verwachting wordt nog in 2026 duidelijk welke vorm de uitbreiding van de bibliotheek en de eventuele betrokkenheid van de Wilhelminakerk zullen krijgen.

The church could provide space for activities for which the library itself is less suitable, such as concerts, film screenings, lectures, and larger gatherings. There are therefore no plans to withdraw the building from its function as a place of worship. On the contrary, the church has just celebrated its centenary with a jubilee worship service, the publication of a commemorative booklet, and various other activities. The Wilhelmina Church also plays an important role in the church life of Bussum.

The discussions therefore appear to be focused primarily on a future in which the Wilhelmina Church retains its ecclesiastical function while also assuming a larger role as a cultural meeting place in the heart of Bussum.
