Het College van Kerkrentmeesters van de Protestantse Gemeente te Drachten houdt zich momenteel bezig met de vraag wat er met de luidklok van de (voormalig gereformeerde kerk) Menorah moet gebeuren.
De laatste dienst in de kerk werd in 2021 gehouden, waarna de kerk al spoedig werd afgebroken. Maar de luidklok werd goed bewaard, want met de kopers van de Menorah was destijds schriftelijk afgesproken dat de luidklok tijdens de sloopwerkzaamheden heelhuids uit de toren zou worden verwijderd en, omdat de Kerkrentmeesters zich ervan bewust zijn dat dit een gevoelig onderwerp is, wil men de kerkelijke gemeente bij de beslissing over de bestemming van de klok betrekken.
Onderzoek van de luidklok maakte uit dat de klok geen bijzondere kenmerken heeft die specifiek betrekking hebben op de Menorah (zoals een tekst op een luidklok die kan hebben). Ook is het gebruikte brons niet van bijzondere kwaliteit.
De openstaande opties zijn: hergebruik van de luidklok; het als een herinneringsvoorwerp beschouwen; de klok omsmelten; of hergebruik als luidklok. Voor dat laatste heeft zich een kerkelijke gemeente uit Bolsward gemeld. De Kerkrentmeesters achten hergebruik door een kerkelijke gemeente het meest acceptabel. Als de luidklok als herinneringsvoorwerp ergens in Drachten geplaatst zou worden “staat de luidklok voor verlies en verdriet”. Hoewel er om het verlies van de kerk ‘nog steeds verdriet is, gaan de ontwikkelingen door’.
De Kerkrentmeesters geven aan dat hun voorkeur sterk uitgaat naar het hergebruik in de oorspronkelijke functie als luidklok voor een kerkgebouw ‘met de kanttekening dat bij de luidklok dan moet worden aangegeven dat de klok afkomstig is van de Menorah, waar deze in gebruik geweest is van 1970 tot 2021.
De Kerkrentmeesters roepen met nadruk ook de voorstanders van het voorgenomen besluit op, daarop te reageren. Wordt vervolgd.

Quo Vadis, Church Bell of the Menorah in Drachten?
The College of Churchwardens of the Protestant Congregation in Drachten is currently considering what should be done with the bell from the (formerly ‘gereformeerde’ Church) Menorah.
The final service in the church took place in 2021, after which the building was soon demolished. However, the bell was carefully preserved, as a written agreement had been made with the buyers of the Menorah at the time stating that the bell would be removed intact from the tower during the demolition. Because the Churchwardens are aware that this is a sensitive subject, they want to involve the church community in deciding the future of the bell.
Research on the bell revealed that it has no special features specifically related to the Menorah (such as an inscription that some bells might have). Nor is the bronze used of any special quality.
The current options being considered are: repurposing the bell; treating it as a commemorative object; melting it down; or reusing it as a bell. For the latter option, a church congregation from Bolsward has come forward. The Churchwardens consider reuse by another church congregation to be the most acceptable option. If the bell were to be placed somewhere in Drachten as a commemorative object, “the bell would represent loss and sorrow.” Although “there is still grief over the loss of the church, developments are moving forward.”
The Churchwardens state that their strong preference is for the bell to be reused in its original function as a church bell, with the note that it should be clearly indicated that the bell came from the Menorah, where it was in use from 1970 to 2021.
The Churchwardens also emphatically call on supporters of the proposed decision to respond to it. To be continued.
