De eerste kerkelijke vergaderingen van de ‘Christian Reformed Church’ sinds 1857.

( < Naar deel 14 – Back to Part 14 ) – In onze serie over de kerkelijke vergaderingen van de naar Amerika geëmigreerde Afgescheidenen, sinds 1857 behorende tot de toen opgerichte Christian Reformed Church (zoals nader uitgelegd in deel 1), gaan we verder met de vergadering van 1 oktober1862. Tussen [] staan verhelderende of aanvullende opmerkingen van de redactie van GereformeerdeKerken.info.

Classicale vergadering gehouden te Grand Rapids op heden de 1ste oktober 1862.

De vergadering is geopend met het zingen van psalm 84 vers 3 en met gebed door ds. K. van den Bosch. De notulen der vorige vergadering zijn voorgelezen en daarop werden geen aanmerkingen gemaakt.

Art. 1 – De vergadering gaat over tot het kiezen van een scriba voor de vergadering en met meerderheid van stemmen werd daartoe verkozen br. Ouderling J. Gelok. De afgevaardigden bleken te zijn:

Zeeland en Noordeloos – Ds. K. van den Bosch en T. van den Bosch en Jan Ebels (ouderlingen).

Graafschap – G. van Tubbergen en H. Bouws (ouderlingen)

Vriesland – H. Dam (ouderling)

Grand Rapids – H. Moerman en J. Gelok (ouderlingen).

Art. 2 – De preses vraagt of de gemeente te Grand Rapids ook zaken heeft te behandelen, waarop [ontkennend] geantwoord wordt; maar zij wilde [wel] raad vragen hoe voorts te handelen om leraren te beroepen, daar tot heden alles wordt afgesneden [mislukt is].

De classis oordeelt en raadt de kerkenraad aan om [de Nederlandse predikanten] ds. [J.] Alting [1821-1890], ds. [W.H.] Frieling [1820-1905] en ds. [K.J.] van Goor [1816-1882] aan de gemeente voor te stellen en mocht een van die leraren beroepen wordt, geeft de classis vrijheid om in de beroepsbrief te [schrijven] dat ook haar begeerte vurig zij, dat die leraar tot ons zou overkomen. [Ds. Frieling ging in 1866 naar Amerika en sloot zich aan bij dit kerkgenootschap, de Ware Hollandse Gereformeerde Kerk, die in deze artikelenserie centraal staat]

Art. 3 – De gemeente Zeeland en Noordeloos, alsmede van Vriesland heeft geen zaken te behandelen.

Art. 4 – De gemeente Graafschap heeft vooreerst een zaak aangaande de ellende die er [in die gemeente] bestaat door een lid aangenomen te hebben met name B. Ploeg, [van wie] door de kerkeraad gepubliceerd was als tot de gemeente te behoren, welk [lidmaatschap] naderhand door tussenkomst van de classis vernietigd is geworden. De classis besluit opnieuw dat de zaak aangaande het lidmaatschap van broeder Ploeg geheel overgegeven wordt aan de kerkeraad der gemeente, met deze voorwaarde, dat de kerkeraad dier gemeente belijdenis doet in het openbaar voor de gemeente door [op te merken met betrekking tot] br. Ploeg gezondigd te hebben tegen een vroeger besluit van de classis, hetwelk [bepaalde] dat alle leden die inkomen met belijdenis of uit andere genootschappen openbaar zullen bevestigd worden.

[Verder] vraagt de kerkeraad van Graafschap opnieuw vrijheid om een leraar te beroepen, hetwelk door de classis met genoegen wordt toegestaan.

[Tenslotte] vraagt die kerkeraad hoe naar gelang van omstandigheden te moeten handelen in het bevestigen van leden die overkomen: bevestigen of niet bevestigen.

Art. 5 – De classis besluit opnieuw bij vorige besluiten te blijven. Deze zitting wordt gesloten met te zingen uit psalm 102 vers 7 en dankzegging door de br. Ouderling J. Gelok.

• De namiddagzitting wordt geopend door de br. Ouderling G. Van Tubbergen, en het zingen van psalm 25 vers 2.

Art. 6 – De preses vraagt hoe te handelen met de leden uit de Stad Holland [Holland behoorde toen officieel nog niet tot dit kerkgenootschap]. De classis oordeelt dat die leden nog voor rekening zijn van de kerkenraad der gemeente te Graafschap.

Art. 7 – Verder vraagt de preses of de zaak aangaande br. Naaije behandeld was. De kerkeraad meende, omdat voornoemde broeder van woonplaats veranderd was, dat zij [daarom] nu voor rekening van die kerkenraad [was]. Maar omdat  er geen attestatie was afgegeven oordeelde de classis dat br. Naaije nog voor rekening der Gemeente van Graafschap lag.

Art. 8 – Verder is gehandeld over br. Krabshuis, die geschorst is geworden in zijn bediening als ouderling en daar die broeder ook zijn lidmaatschap had ingetrokken en [omdat] het leek of die br. daar berouw over had, [wordt gevraagd] hoe nu met hem te handelen. De classis raadt aan met voornoemde broeder in liefde te handelen en hem op een christelijke wijze volgens Gods Woord en aangenomen Kerkorde te handelen.

Art. 9 – Daar er door de preses geoordeeld wordt om […] ds. [J.] Schepers en ds. Smit, die kerkelijk verenigd zijn met de Schotse kerk, […] aan te schrijven, hetwelk geschied zijnde, zo verschijnt op de vergadering ds. Schepers, doch ds. Smit wordt door ongesteldheid verhinderd.

De preses vraagt aan ds. Schepers of Zijn Eerwaarde niet oordeelt om zich met de Afgescheidenen alhier te verenigen, omdat die zich bevinden op ons voorvaderlijke standpunt. Ds. Schepers verklaart ook bij die kerk te behoren; doch de preses verklaart dat niet te kunnen beoordelen; maar omdat de spraak onbekend is en ds. Schepers en zijn gemeente voortgesproten zijn uit de Hollandse kerk, of het ook roeping is om te samen hier als broeders te handelen. Ds. Schepers verklaart zich wel los te kunnen maken van de Schotse Kerk, als de kerk in Nederland ons wilde erkennen; maar zo lang dat niet kan geschieden,  hij zich niet kan losmaken. Ds. Schepers vraagt om verslag te [mogen] geven over de Schotse kerk, hetwelk de classis toestaat. Ds. Schepers verklaart dat de Schotse kerk leert gelijk onze vaderen, alleen heeft zij andere huishoudelijke gewoontes [c.q. een andere kerkorde]. De preses vraagt of zij ook censuur uitoefenen, hetwelk ds. Schepers erkent daarvan bewust te zijn.

Er wordt gevraagd of de Schotse Kerk ‘oude of nieuwe Presbyterianen‘ genoemd wordt, hetwelk ds. Schepers beantwoordt geen van beide te zijn; [ze is] ook niet één lichaam met de Afgescheiden Kerk in Nederland, en er bestaat ook geen [officiële] correspondentie met die kerk. Br. Schepers vraagt of men hem niet zou kunnen toestaan om enige correspondentie te houden met de Schotse kerk, hetwelk de classis  niet afkeurt, daar zij dit zelf vroeger had gedaan.

Verder vraagt ds. Schepers, omdat zij zelf de classicale vergadering hebben op 15 oktober, of wij ook geen Afgevaardigden zouden sturen, hetwelk de classis goedkeurt. De classis gaat nu over tot het kiezen van afgevaardigden, waartoe met meerderheid van stemmen benoemd zijn ds. Van den Bosch en br. Vader en de drie ouderlingen van Graafschap, en wel de broeders Bouwe, Strabbing en P. Boven. Ds. Schepers verklaarde nog verder [de] redenen waarom zij zich niet dadelijk konden losmaken [van de Schotse kerk]; die zijn deze: als de Nederlandse [Afgescheiden] Kerk ons niet wilde aannemen, om dan onze Jongelingen die God ons mocht geven, daar te kunnen laten onderwijzen in de talen en dan bij onze leraren de Godgeleerdheid te onderwijzen.

Art. 10 – Er wordt in het midden gebracht (daar ds. Van den Bosch door de drukte hier niet kon blijven en de kerkeraad der gemeente van Grand Rapids heeft bekend gemaakt dat zij donderdagavond prediking zou hebben), of broeder ds. Schepers bij ons zou [willen] blijven en prediken, doch geen sacramenten bedienen, hetwelk Zijn Eerwaarde op zich neemt.

Art. 11 – De preses doet verslag dat Zijn Eerwaarde op een verzoek van enige personen uit Milwaukee derwaarts is gegaan en daar een gemeente gesticht heeft.

Art. 12 – Verder wordt voorgesteld om op de eerste woensdag in de maand februari classicale vergadering te houden en wel te Vriesland. De vergadering wordt gesloten met te zingen uit psalm 130 vers 4 en dankzegging door de ouderling H. Bouws.

From ‘Classis’ to ‘Synod’ in America (15).

The first ecclesiastical meetings of the Christian Reformed Church since 1857.

(< Back to Part 14) (link) – In our series about the ecclesiastical meetings of the Seceders who emigrated to America, since 1857 belonging to the then newly established Christian Reformed Church (as further explained in Part 1), we continue with the meeting of October 1, 1862.

Classis meeting held at Grand Rapids on this day, October 1, 1862.

The meeting was opened with the singing of Psalm 84:3 and prayer by Rev. K. van den Bosch.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read, and no comments were made on them.

Article 1 – The assembly proceeds to elect a clerk for the meeting, and Elder J. Gelok is chosen by majority vote.

The delegates present were:

• Zeeland and Noordeloos – Rev. K. van den Bosch, T. van den Bosch, and Jan Ebels (elders)

• Graafschap – G. van Tubbergen and H. Bouws (elders)

• Vriesland – H. Dam (elder)

• Grand Rapids – H. Moerman and J. Gelok (elders)

Article 2. – The chairman asks whether the congregation of Grand Rapids has any matters to address, to which the answer is [negative]; however, he seeks advice on how to proceed with calling pastors, as all previous efforts have thus far failed.

The classis judges and advises the consistory to propose the following Dutch ministers to the congregation:

• Rev. J. Alting (1821–1890)

• Rev. W.H. Frieling (1820–1905)

• Rev. K.J. van Goor (1816–1882)

Should one of these ministers be called, the classis grants permission to state in the call letter that they fervently desire the minister to come over to them.

[Rev. Frieling later emigrated to America in 1866 and joined this denomination, the True Dutch Reformed Church.]

Article 3. – The congregations of Zeeland and Noordeloos, as well as Vriesland, have no matters to be addressed.

Article 4. – The congregation of Graafschap brings forth a matter concerning the trouble caused by admitting a member named B. Ploeg, who had been announced by the consistory as belonging to the congregation. This membership was later annulled by intervention of the classis.

The classis decides again that the matter concerning brother Ploeg’s membership be fully handed over to the local consistory, on the condition that the consistory publicly confess before the congregation that it had sinned in regard to brother Ploeg, violating a previous classis decision that all incoming members—whether by confession of faith or from other denominations—must be publicly confirmed.

Furthermore, the consistory of Graafschap again asks for permission to call a pastor, which the classis gladly grants.

Finally, the consistory asks how to act according to circumstances in confirming incoming members: to confirm or not to confirm?

Article 5. – The classis decides to adhere to previous decisions.

The session is closed with the singing of Psalm 102:7 and a prayer of thanksgiving by elder J. Gelok.

The afternoon session is opened by elder G. van Tubbergen with the singing of Psalm 25:2.

Article 6. – The chairman asks how to proceed with members from the city of Holland [which at that time officially still did not belong to this denomination].
The classis judges that these members still fall under the responsibility of the consistory of Graafschap.

Article 7. – Next, the chairman asks whether the case concerning brother Naaije has been dealt with.
The consistory thought that, since the brother had moved residence, responsibility had shifted to the new consistory.
However, because no letter of transfer (attestation) had been issued, the classis rules that brother Naaije remains the responsibility of the congregation of Graafschap.

Article 8. – They also deliberate the case of brother Krabshuis, who had been suspended from his duties as elder, and who had withdrawn his membership.
Now that it seems this brother may be remorseful, the question arises: how to deal with him?

The classis advises that the consistory deal with him in love, and in a Christian manner according to God’s Word and the adopted Church Order.

Article 9. – The chairman judges that Rev. J. Schepers and Rev. Smit, who are ecclesiastically united with the Scottish Church, should be contacted.
After this is done, Rev. Schepers appears at the meeting, while Rev. Smit is absent due to illness.

The chairman asks Rev. Schepers whether he does not judge that he should unite with the Seceders here, as they stand on the position of our forefathers.

Rev. Schepers declares that he belongs to that church, but the chairman says he cannot judge that.
Since the language is unfamiliar and Rev. Schepers and his congregation originate from the Dutch Church, the question arises whether there is a calling to act as brothers together here.

Rev. Schepers states that he could separate from the Scottish Church if the Dutch Church would recognize them, but as long as that is not the case, he cannot separate.

Rev. Schepers asks permission to give a report about the Scottish Church, which the classis allows.

He states that the Scottish Church teaches as our forefathers did, but has different domestic customs.

The chairman asks whether the Scottish Church also practices discipline, to which Rev. Schepers affirms that he is aware of this.

It is asked whether the Scottish Church is called the “Old” or “New” Presbyterians, to which Rev. Schepers replies: neither.
They are also not one body with the Seceder Church in the Netherlands, and there is no correspondence with that church.

Brother Schepers asks whether he may maintain some correspondence with the Scottish Church, which the classis does not disapprove, since they themselves had previously done so.

Rev. Schepers also asks, since their own classical meeting will be held on October 15, whether we could send delegates, which the classis approves.

The classis proceeds to choose delegates, and by majority vote appoints:

• Rev. Van den Bosch, brother Vader, and the three elders from Graafschap: brothers Bouws, Strabbing, and P. Boven.

Rev. Schepers further explains why they cannot immediately separate from the Scottish Church.
The reasons are:

• if the Dutch Church will not accept them, they want to be able to send their young men—if God provides them—to be taught languages there, and to be taught theology by their ministers.

Article 10. – It is proposed—since Rev. Van den Bosch could not stay due to busyness and the consistory of Grand Rapids announced a preaching service for Thursday evening—whether Rev. Schepers would be willing to stay and preach, though not administer sacraments.
He agrees to this.

Article 11. – The chairman reports that Rev. Schepers, upon request from several individuals from Milwaukee, had gone there and founded a congregation.

Article 12. – It is further proposed to hold the next classis meeting on the first Wednesday of February, to be held in Vriesland.

The meeting is closed with the singing of Psalm 130:4 and thanksgiving by elder H. Bouws.
